Welcome to The Dry Eye Clinic at Eden Eyecare, Penrith, run by our highly qualified Consultant and Dry Eye Specialist, Mr Iain Macnish BSc MCOptom DipTp(IP).
If your eyes feel like they're burning, scratchy, gritty or irritated, or if you've noticed watery eyes or vision that seems to blur and clear intermittently, you may be experiencing dry eye. It's an extremely common condition, particularly among people over 50 and those who spend long hours in front of screens, but the good news is that it can be effectively treated and managed.
Dry eye is one of our key specialisms at Eden Eyecare, and we offer a full range of treatment plans including cutting-edge technologies proven to provide relief, from mild, occasional dryness through to more advanced cases where the cornea may be at risk. Whatever the severity, we treat both the symptoms and the underlying causes, giving you lasting relief rather than a quick fix.
We welcome clients from Penrith, across Cumbria, and from all over the UK.
The Dry Eye Clinic at Eden Eyecare provides advanced diagnostics and a full range of treatments from our Penrith Clinic, personalised to target the root cause of your dry eye and treat effectively.

Dry eye syndrome (also known as dry eye disease or dry eye condition) occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears, or when your tears evaporate too quickly to keep the surface of your eye properly lubricated. It’s one of the most common eye conditions we see, and it can affect people of any age, though it becomes more common as you get older.
There are several possible causes of dry eyes, including:
When your eyes aren’t properly lubricated, this leads to the classic dry eye symptoms: dryness, irritation, grittiness, redness, and general discomfort. Some people also notice watery eyes, which can seem counterintuitive, but is often the eye’s response to irritation.
One of the most common underlying causes of dry eye disease is blepharitis, a condition affecting the eyelids that disrupts the natural tear film. It’s a common condition, particularly among older adults; roughly 80% of people over 60 have some degree of blepharitis.
If you’re experiencing persistent or problematic dry eye symptoms, it’s definitely worth booking in for a Dry Eye Consultation with our dry eye specialist who can properly diagnose the underlying cause and recommend the right treatment for you.

Recent studies show that around 20% of dry eye patients have an associated form of rosacea linked to Demodex, a microscopic mite that lives in the eyelash follicles and meibomian glands. When Demodex numbers build up, they contribute to inflammation, blocked glands and the kind of chronic dry eye that doesn’t respond well to drops alone.
This is why we’ve adapted and improved our approach for rosacea patients. Where we identify rosacea alongside dry eye symptoms, we can now combine our state-of-the-art OptiLIGHT IPL treatments with the new vascular filter as standard.
The IPL addresses the underlying inflammation and Demodex activity, while the vascular filter targets the visible blood vessels that so often accompany the condition. The result is an approach that treats the whole picture, calming the skin, reducing visible vessels and, most importantly, easing the dry eye symptoms that so often go hand in hand with rosacea.
We can also offer this as an aesthetic treatment to other areas of the face.

When you come to see us at Eden Eyecare, you’ll be looked after personally by our clinical lead, Mr Iain Macnish. Iain will start by discussing your full medical history, then carry out a slit lamp examination to find out what’s causing your dry eye.
He may also carry out some further diagnostic tests. These sometimes involve the use of drops, but rest assured, these won’t affect your vision.
Once Iain has a clear picture of what’s going on, he’ll talk you through the diagnosis and the treatment options available to you, so you understand exactly what’s involved before deciding how to move forward. We have multiple treatment options, so we work together to find the right one for you.
Once you’ve chosen a treatment option together, Iain will put together a personalised management plan designed to address both the causes and the symptoms of your condition.
We’ll then book a follow-up appointment to get your treatment underway.
Lubricating drops, often called artificial tears, are usually the first thing people reach for when they notice dryness, grittiness, or fluctuations in vision
Over time, blocked eyelid oil glands can contribute to blepharitis or dry eye, making the eye surface more vulnerable and uncomfortable.
Dry, irritated eyes can affect everything from reading and driving to screen use and everyday comfort. Not sure why you have sore, gritty and tired eyes? Try our Dry Eyes Symptom Test!
