Eden Eyecare offers OptiLIGHT from our Penrith Dry Eye Clinic, the first and only light-based treatment approved by the FDA specifically for managing Dry Eye Disease. Rather than just easing symptoms, OptiLIGHT works at the root cause of dry eye for millions of sufferers, offering fast, effective relief through gentle light therapy.
The treatment uses advanced, precisely controlled light technology that really works, ensuring every session is safe, comfortable, and effective, backed by over 40 clinical studies.
Eden Eyecare is one of a handful of pioneering practices to bring this effective, non-invasive dry eye treatment to the UK. Unlike most high street opticians, we can also prescribe medication where needed, are licensed to use the latest dry eye treatment technology, and provide hospital-level diagnostics, all in-house.
At Eden Eyecare, OptiLIFT can be combined with OptiLIGHT IPL therapy and Meibomian Gland Expression for a complete, gold-standard approach to dry eye treatment in Cumbria, the North West of England, and beyond.
Eden Eyecare are delighted to provide our patients with the first and only IPL FDA-approved for the management of dry eye disease. OptiLight uses Lumenis’ patented Optimal Pulse Technology (OPTTM) for a safe, precise, and effective treatment, clinically supported by over 40 clinical studies.

IPL Therapy is a non-invasive dry eye treatment, clinically proven to reduce dry eye symptoms by treating the root cause, not just masking it. Eden Eyecare is one of the only practices in the North West of England offering this service to patients.
Most dry eye treatments only ease symptoms without addressing what’s actually causing them. IPL therapy targets the underlying cause of meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) and dry eye syndrome, offering long-lasting relief for the millions of people affected. During treatment, gentle pulses of light are applied to the skin around the eyes to calm inflammation and reduce bacteria. This gently loosens thickened build-up on the eyelids, releasing trapped oil and unblocking the glands responsible for keeping eyes comfortable and hydrated.
Combined with OptiLIFT, which strengthens the muscles around the eyes, this forms the Gold Standard of Dry Eye Treatment at our Specialist Dry Eye Clinic in Cumbria. Together, the two treatments improve gland function, strengthen the tear film, and reduce dryness and irritation, offering a complete approach to both eye health and appearance: relieving dry eye symptoms while firming the skin and muscles around the eyes.
Decrease the level of pro-inflammatory markers that exist around your eyes
Destroy the abnormal blood vessels that can cause the inflammation.
Significantly boost tear break up time and decrease viscosity of tears.
Improve the oil glands along the edge of the eyelids where the eyelashes are found.
Decrease the population of Demodex mites, which can cause infection and boost the bacterial load on eyelids.
When OptiLIGHT is combined with OptiLIFT, we see incredible lasting results.
Recent studies show that around 20% of dry eye patients have an associated form of rosacea linked to Demodex, a microscopic mite that lives in the eyelash follicles and meibomian glands. When Demodex numbers build up, they contribute to inflammation, blocked glands and the kind of chronic dry eye that doesn’t respond well to drops alone.
This is why we’ve adapted and improved our approach for rosacea patients. Where we identify rosacea alongside dry eye symptoms, we can now combine our state-of-the-art OptiLIGHT IPL treatments with the new vascular filter as standard.
The IPL addresses the underlying inflammation and Demodex activity, while the vascular filter targets the visible blood vessels that so often accompany the condition. The result is an approach that treats the whole picture, calming the skin, reducing visible vessels and, most importantly, easing the dry eye symptoms that so often go hand in hand with rosacea.
We can also offer this as an aesthetic treatment to other areas of the face.

To keep you comfortable, your Dry Eye Consultant, Mr Iain Macnish, will first place soft shields over your eyelids to protect them from the light pulses, along with a thin layer of cooling gel around the eyes for extra protection.
He will then gently hold a small handheld device over your eyelids to deliver the light treatment. The gentle warmth from the light helps to soften and clear the thickened build-up that’s blocking your oil glands. Each session takes around 25 minutes, or up to 45 minutes if combined with another treatment.
Once your glands have been gently opened up, we may also apply light pressure to encourage a small amount of oil through, helping to get things flowing naturally again. This is known as Meibomain Gland Expression.
